The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning to school proprietors against forcing parents and guardians to purchase uniforms, books, and stationery exclusively from their institutions.

The government, speaking through the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) on Sunday, reminded citizens of their consumer rights as schools nationwide prepare for a new academic session.

According to the agency, it is a common practice for schools to hand parents a checklist of textbooks, uniforms, and stationery immediately after completing the admission process. LASCOPA, however, noted that a violation occurs when schools reject identical, approved items purchased from outside vendors at lower prices.

“Where equivalent approved products are reasonably available elsewhere, parents and guardians should generally be free to choose where to purchase them,” the agency stated. “A school should not unnecessarily restrict parents from buying equivalent approved books, uniforms, or stationery from other suppliers.”

Condemning the rigid "buy-from-us-only" policies enforced by some schools, the state government urged parents to resist exploitation, know their rights, and speak up against unfair commercial practices.

LASCOPA further advised aggrieved parents and the general public to report schools violating these guidelines through its official emergency lines, reaffirming the administration`s stance that "In Lagos State, consumers are kings."
