CHIEFTAINCY TUSSLE: OYO GOVT OVERRULES SOUN OF OGBOMOSO, DECLARES SUSPENSION OF BALOGUN ILLEGAL

Published on Fri 23 Oct 2026 By Akinwale Akintayo

The Oyo State Government has officially overturned the indefinite suspension of the Balogun of Ogbomosoland, Dr. Saka Adegbite Balogun, by the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye.

According to reports received by THENEWSCREDIT, the state government on Friday insisted that the monarch lacks the constitutional and legal authority to suspend a recognized Part II chieftaincy holder, declaring the palace`s action null, void, and of no effect.

The administration`s decisive intervention follows an October 20, 2026 letter personally signed by Oba Olaoye, which directed the indefinite suspension of Dr. Balogun. The Soun had cited the Balogun’s alleged refusal to sign an Oath of Allegiance to the throne—a requirement the monarch described as mandatory for any member of the Executive Council of Chiefs of Ogbomosoland—as the basis for the disciplinary action.

However, the state government, speaking through the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Hon. Ademola Ojo, vehemently rejected the suspension, labeling it a direct violation of state laws.

In a press statement issued on Friday, October 23, 2026, Ojo cited Section 26(1) of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State, Cap 28 (2000). The Commissioner clarified that the statutory power to appoint, suspend, or depose any Part II recognized chieftaincy holder rests exclusively with the Executive Governor of the State, not a traditional ruler.

Describing the Soun`s action as an "aberration" unknown to the legal frameworks governing traditional councils, the government reaffirmed that Dr. Saka Adegbite Balogun remains the bona fide Balogun of Ogbomosoland. The public was urged to entirely disregard any reports claiming his removal.

The escalating palace drama reached the government`s desk following an official petition by the Balogun Taiwo Atere-Gbebi Family of Isale-Afon, Ogbomoso. In an appeal dated October 22, 2026, and addressed to Governor Seyi Makinde, the family lamented that the suspension letter was dropped at the palace on October 21 without any prior dialogue, inquiry, or fair hearing.

The family further raised grave allegations against the palace, claiming that Dr. Balogun and his entourage had been physically locked out and barred from entering the royal palace on two separate occasions since his installation on December 19, 2025. These incidents reportedly occurred during the traditional `Ikije` homage and following the formal commissioning of the Ojabgo Market.

The petition also revealed a lingering financial grievance, noting that the Balogun has not received his statutory salaries since April 2025.

As tensions simmer in the historic town, the state government has reiterated its stance that traditional institutions must operate strictly within the boundaries of the law, warning that any disciplinary action against recognized chiefs must fully comply with state chieftaincy legislation.
