President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a monthly transport support allowance of N70,000 for all categories of public service workers. The decision came on Tuesday, October 27, just as a four-day ultimatum issued by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to shut down the national economy over fuel price hikes and minimum wage disputes was set to elapse. The breakthrough followed an emergency meeting between the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, and the NLC leadership, led by Comrade Joe Ajaero. According to the Federal Government, the N70,000 transport intervention will take effect on November 5, 2026, and will run for a duration of six months to cushion the biting impact of the rising cost of living. In an official statement, the government confirmed, “That transport intervention of seventy thousand naira (N70,000), commencing from November 2026, would be paid across all levels for a period of six months.” In addition to the transport palliative, the Federal Government has approved the immediate clearance of outstanding peculiar allowance arrears. The arrears, which took effect on May 1, 2026, will be disbursed in three equal monthly instalments starting this November. Crucially, both parties also agreed to immediately set up a negotiation committee to determine the implementation date for a new national minimum wage, effectively suspending the impending industrial action. The NLC had earlier threatened a total economic shutdown if the government failed to crash petrol prices and review the N70,000 monthly minimum wage.
