Six people died and seven others suffered serious injuries on Tuesday when a speeding car lost control and crashed into a crowded market junction in Umuikaa, Abia State. The driver of the vehicle reportedly sped past a minor checkpoint before careening off the dual carriageway and ploughing directly into roadside traders and commuters.

The fatal crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. near the busy Umuikaa junction along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway. Eyewitnesses report that the speeding sedan veered off the asphalt with a loud screech. It smashed through display tables and benches before coming to a violent halt against a concrete drainage culvert.

Traders and local youths rushed to the scene immediately after the loud impact. They pulled victims from beneath the mangled car and tried to revive the wounded. Chaos engulfed the area as frantic relatives searched for their loved ones among the rubble and spilled goods.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene roughly twenty minutes after the distress call. Abia State government officials visited the accident scene on Wednesday morning to commiserate with grieving families. The sector commander of the FRSC urged motorists to obey speed limits, especially near open markets and residential areas.
