Published on Tue 01 Sep 2026 By Temilola Odeniyi

Four people died and four others were rescued alive after a three-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The building sat at No. 41 Popo Giwa Street, right beside the Gogoro Mosque in the Ile Oyan Masalasi Gogoro district. Emergency teams rushed to the site to dig through the heavy concrete and twisted metal.

Hassan Adekunle, the Public Relations Officer for the Kwara State Fire Service, confirmed the casualty numbers. "Based on the situation report, now we`ve recovered four people dead and rescued four people alive," Adekunle stated.

Earlier estimates from the scene suggested that at least six individuals, including two children, had initially been pulled from the dust and debris. Eyewitnesses reported that local residents joined hands with emergency personnel before heavy machinery arrived. Workers used an excavator to lift large slabs of the collapsed structure to search for anyone still trapped underneath.

Authorities have not yet identified the exact cause of the sudden collapse. Officials also do not know the total number of people who were inside the building when it fell. Search-and-rescue operations remain active at the site.
