The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has explicitly declared that he will never resort to personal insults or abuse against President Bola Tinubu. Speaking before a gathering of media executives, the opposition leader insisted that political differences should be anchored strictly on governance, national policies, and institutional performance rather than personal animosity.

Addressing the audience on Friday at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, Obi clarified his stance on political discourse in the country. He noted that public debates must be elevated above toxic rhetoric to foster a healthier democratic environment. The high-profile event converged under the theme, “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”

In his address, the former Anambra State governor challenged anyone to produce evidence of him ever throwing insults at public officials. He stated firmly that his brand of politics focuses entirely on structural solutions and accountability. Obi maintained that his discipline extends to all levels of government, including state executives who are often the targets of political mudslinging.

"I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in the federal government. I’ve never abused anybody," Obi stated. Reaffirming his deference to the nation`s highest office, he added, "Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect."

However, the NDC presidential candidate quickly pointed out that extending respect to leaders should never be misconstrued as a blank check for administrative complacency. He argued that deference to authority must coexist with robust public oversight. According to Obi, citizens and media professionals hold a constitutional responsibility to critique policies that impact the populace negatively.

He further emphasized that the character and moral conduct of political leaders play a pivotal role in shaping the ethical fabric of the wider society. When leaders engage in transparent governance, it filters down to elevate national values. Conversely, a lack of accountability from the top can erode public trust and societal standards.

Rounding off his speech, Obi charged Nigerian editors to remain steadfast in their role as the fourth estate of the realm. He urged the media to scrutinize politicians rigorously based on their public track records, official statements, and verifiable qualifications rather than emotional rhetoric. This approach, he concluded, remains the most viable pathway to keeping Nigeria`s democracy alive and functional.
