The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has raised a grim alarm over systemic corruption in Nigeria, revealing that public officers steal national resources "every single minute."

Speaking in Abuja on Thursday at the 80th birthday celebration of former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, Olukoyede disclosed that the anti-graft agency is overwhelmed by an influx of over 20,000 corruption petitions annually. He described the details buried within the commission`s case files as deeply harrowing.

"Like every minute, public officers take money, and if you go through some of our case files you will weep. The way people take national resources... Nigerians are victims of these fraudulent activities. We must come together for once in our lifetime and say no to the activities of some of our leaders."— Ola Olukoyede, EFCC Chairman.

The EFCC boss highlighted the staggering pace at which public servants amass unexplained wealth. He noted a recurring pattern where officials assume office with less than ₦100,000 in their bank accounts, only for investigators to trace millions of dollars and hundreds of properties to them just three years later.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has demanded an immediate end to Nigeria`s culture of impunity, warning that corruption is actively "killing Nigeria." Moving forward, the anti-graft agency has mandated that strict accountability and transparency serve as the standard guide for all public service operations. Under these rigorous new standards, all public officers must be prepared to comprehensively explain their wealth and stewardship while in office.
