He advocated for a rigorous vetting process—a "Social Audit"—to evaluate the past performance and integrity of those seeking office. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (North-West), Abdullahi Yakassai, has stated that Nigeria’s worsening security situation is affecting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, revealing that the president is struggling to sleep. Yakassai made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief. He explained that while security has improved in some parts of the country, new tactics employed by criminal groups are creating fresh challenges. “The security situation in some parts of the country has really been subdued, but there are new tactics emerging, like what we are seeing in Kwara State, which is very unfortunate,” he said. According to him, the president has been holding regular Security Council meetings at the Presidential Villa to address the situation. “Even the president is having sleepless nights because every week you see him holding a Security Council meeting to address this insecurity,” he stated. His comments come amid rising cases of banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, particularly in northern Nigeria. Yakassai said tackling insecurity has become more difficult because criminal groups are now employing guerrilla-style tactics. “It is very hard to tackle. This crisis has been ongoing for a long time, and you cannot just blame this government alone,” he said. He also claimed that some individuals are deliberately fuelling insecurity to damage the government’s reputation. “There is a hand behind this kind of insecurity. Some elements are against this government and are instigating these acts to give the administration a bad name,” he added. However, he noted improvements in certain areas, including parts of the Abuja-Kaduna road and Zamfara State, while observing that criminal groups appear to be shifting their activities to locations such as Niger and Kwara states. Yakassai expressed hope that ongoing efforts by security agencies will eventually bring the situation under control. “We know a lot still needs to be done, but with time and collective effort, insecurity will continue to decline until it is eliminated,” he said.

The Police Command in Kwara has confirmed the death of one person due to an explosion caused by improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by suspected bandits in Woro, Kaiama Local Government Area. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incident, which happened on Monday morning, led to the death of a commercial driver, while a nursing mother was critically injured. The state Commissioner of Police, Mr Adekimi Ojo, who confirmed the incident, debunked earlier reports indicating scores of people died in the incident. Ojo said that the incident involved a driver of a commercial Toyota vehicle and the female passenger; a nursing mother with her baby. He said that the driver died on the spot after stepping on the IED, adding that the woman sustained serious injury. The CP, however, said that the baby was unscathed. Ojo also said that the security situation in the area has been brought under control. A resident, Dr Abdul Woro, said the device was planted along the road leading into the community and detonated as the vehicle approached. “They planted the explosive on the road. As soon as the vehicle passed, it went off. The driver died instantly and the woman was badly injured,” he said. Also confirming the incident, the Chairman of Kaiama Local Government Area, Mr. Abubakar Abdullahi, said the attack happened shortly after 7:00a.m., describing it as a calculated act of retaliation by criminal elements. “The vehicle was carrying two passengers including the driver when the explosion occurred. “Sadly, the driver lost his life on the spot due to the impact,” he said. The chairman said that the injured victim sustained severe wounds, including fractures and a deep head injury, and has been referred to Ilorin for advanced medical care following initial treatment. Abdullahi linked the incident to recent security operations targeting the logistics network of bandits in the area, particularly the arrest of suspected collaborators and disruption of motorcycle supply chains used by the criminals. “This is clearly a reaction. We recently arrested one of their major motorcycle suppliers and some of their members and they are not happy about it,” he said. Abdullahi said that there were two IEDs but only one detonated. The council boss assured that security agencies have secured the area and restored calm, while maintaining heightened surveillance to forestall further attacks. “The area has been secured, and the police have completed their operation there. He, however, raised alarm over the role of informants in aiding criminal activities, calling on residents to support ongoing efforts to flush out bandits. “We are calling on residents to support security agencies with credible information,” he added.

The Oyo State government has warned residents to take precautionary measures following a severe heat stress alert from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, as temperatures soar to dangerous levels. The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, issued the advisory on Monday in Ibadan, the state capital. “The ongoing heatwave is not isolated to Oyo State but part of a nationwide surge in temperatures affecting several states across Nigeria. “With daytime temperatures reaching as high as 41°C, there is a heightened risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke, particularly during this peak dry season,” Aderinto said. He urged residents to remain vigilant and adopt practical safety measures to protect their health and well-being. Aderinto advised limiting outdoor activities, especially between 12:00 pm and 4:00 pm when the sun is at its peak. Those who must be outdoors are encouraged to stay under shade, particularly under trees, as an effective way to reduce heat exposure. He emphasised the importance of proper hydration, even when not feeling thirsty, and advised residents to drink at least two to three litres of water daily. Consumption of water-rich foods, such as fruits and vegetables, can also help regulate body temperature. Residents were further advised to wear light, breathable clothing and protective items such as hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses, while ensuring proper ventilation in homes and workplaces to reduce indoor heat buildup. Aderinto also warned against leaving children, elderly, or pets inside parked vehicles, noting that temperatures inside cars can rise rapidly to fatal levels within minutes. He encouraged residents to watch for early signs of heat stress, including dizziness, fatigue, convulsions, and nausea, and to check on vulnerable neighbours who may require assistance. Highlighting the broader environmental implications of the heatwave, the Commissioner urged citizens to protect existing green spaces and actively participate in tree-planting initiatives to mitigate long-term heat effects. He reassured the public of the government’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property and pledged to provide timely updates as weather conditions evolve.

The faction of the National Union of Road and Transport Workers, NURTW, under the leadership of Tajudeen Baruwa has taken over the national secretariat of the union, THENEWSCREDIT reports. The takeover happened early Monday as members of the faction stormed the union’s headquarters in Abuja. THENEWSCREDIT reports that the NURTW factions led by Baruwa and Ayinde Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, have been involved in an internal leadership tussle since 2024. Members of the NURTW had elected MC Olumo as National President in November 2024. However, the court ruled in favor of Baruwa when the dispute led to a lawsuit. Despite the court ruling, MC Olumo has continued to operate as President.

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested a 21-year-old boy for allegedly raping and killing an elderly woman, identified as Veronica Anthony, in Iboropa-Akoko in Akoko North-East Local Government Area. The suspect, identified as Anthony Alabi, was apprehended following the tracking of the phone of the deceased by police operatives. With the incident heightening tension within the community, security operatives were said to have prevented jungle justice as youths in the community had gathered to descend on the young man. According to the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, Jimoh Abayomi, the suspect, who is currently in custody, confessed to the crime. He said, “Following credible intelligence, detectives promptly launched an investigation, which led to the tracking of the deceased’s missing phone and the subsequent arrest of the suspect “The case has been transferred to Headquarters, Akure, for further discreet investigation and prosecution.”

Bandits on Sunday morning abducted eight worshippers an ECWA church in Omugo, Oro-Ago community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. THENEWSCREDIT however gathered that three of the abductees have been rescued by joint security forces. The attack occurred hours after the Coordinator, Joint Security Watch, Kwara South Senatorial District, Zubair Olaitan, issued an alert warning of imminent attack on some communities in Ifelodun, Irepodun and Isin LGAs. Reacting to the development, the Kwara State Government has tasked the security forces and local vigilantes to ensure that the bandits who attacked the ECWA Church Omugo, are apprehended. The government equally commended the security forces, forest guards and local vigilantes for the rescue of three of the abductees. The government also condemned the “cowardly” targeting of religious places under any guise. In a statement by Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, on Sunday, the Kwara State Government urged the security forces, forest guards, local vigilantes, and community members to continue to work together to end the menace. “While commending the immediate response of the security forces and other stakeholders, we task them to ensure that the ongoing manhunt leads to the rescue of the remaining victims and arrest of the perpetrators,” the statement added. It further commended the security forces, forest guards, and vigilantes for the appreciable progress made in combing of the forests, which has largely curtailed the activities of the criminals in the areas. The government assured the people of its continuous commitment to work with security forces and community stakeholders to protect lives and property.
