Soun of Ogbomosoland Suspends Saka Balogun Indefinitely over Refusal to Sign Allegiance Oath

Published on Wed 21 Oct 2026 By Akinwale Akintayo

The Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, has indefinitely suspended Dr. Saka Adegbite Balogun from his position as the Balogun of Ogbomosoland, THENEWSCREDIT reports.

The monarch’s decision, which took effect on October 20, 2026, followed Dr. Balogun’s alleged refusal to sign the prescribed traditional Oath of Allegiance to the throne.

In a suspension letter obtained by THENEWSCREDIT and signed by the monarch, Oba Olaoye (Orumogege III) noted that signing the oath was a fundamental requirement for assuming the responsibilities of the office. He revealed that Dr. Balogun’s initial appointment had been an exceptional accommodation granted following the intervention of the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on the understanding that the chief would execute the document.

“The oath was neither optional nor ceremonial. It was a fundamental requirement for the proper assumption and exercise of the responsibilities and authority attached to the title,” the letter read.

The front-line traditional ruler also expressed deep concern over recent public statements made by Dr. Balogun, particularly a media interview where the chief reportedly threatened to take the stool of the Soun to court.

Oba Olaoye described the utterance as a grave affront to the dignity of the throne and the sanctity of the palace. He stated that such conduct brought embarrassment to the traditional institution and undermined its standing.

With the indefinite suspension in place, Dr. Balogun has been barred from presenting himself or acting in any official capacity as the Balogun of Ogbomosoland. He is further restricted from exercising any authority, privileges, or responsibilities associated with the title, including making representations or issuing communications on behalf of the office.

Oba Olaoye emphasized that the traditional institution of Ogbomosoland is built on respect for constituted authority and adherence to established customs, adding that no titleholder should expect to retain the privileges of an office while rejecting its fundamental requirements.

Official correspondence sighted by THENEWSCREDIT reveals that this conflict has been brewing for nearly a year. A separate letter dated December 1, 2025, showed that Oba Olaoye had previously reminded Dr. Balogun to sign the customary oath before taking his place among the council of Executive Chiefs, known as the Ilus. While congratulating him on his appointment at the time, the monarch made it clear that he would not be seated with other chiefs until the oath-taking process was completed.

The latest escalation highlights a deep-seated disagreement between the palace and the prominent chief over compliance with the institutional conditions of the title. At the time of this report, it remains unclear whether Dr. Balogun has formalised a response or if he intends to challenge the monarch`s decision in court.
