Muslim-Muslim Ticket A Deceitful Fraud, Fails To Deliver Leadership — Bugaje

Published on Sun 25 Oct 2026 By Temilola Odeniyi

Renowned political activist and Islamic scholar, Dr. Usman Bugaje, has strongly criticized the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket, describing it as a political "fraud" designed to exploit religious sentiments for votes without delivering real governance.

Speaking at a one-day summit in Kano organized by the Islamic Forum of Nigeria, Bugaje asserted that having Muslims in power does not guarantee the protection of Muslim interests. He argued that true leadership should be measured by improvements in citizens` welfare, safety, and living conditions rather than the religious identity of public officials.

The summit, themed "Dilemma of Muslims in Nigeria: The Way Forward," brought together scholars, professionals, and key stakeholders to address pressing national crises, including systemic poverty, bad governance, and the devastating impact of recent economic policies.

Bugaje pointed to the worsening security situation across Northern Nigeria as clear evidence of political failure. He alleged that Boko Haram insurgents still maintain a strong presence around Maiduguri, where they routinely collect taxes and run illegal courts to settle local disputes.

He also sounded the alarm over the security gridlock in Sokoto State, claiming that travel from the state capital to the Isa Local Government Area is now restricted to just twice a week, strictly under the protection of the military Joint Task Force.

Beyond security, the scholar raised economic and social red flags, decrying Nigeria`s heavy reliance on foreign pharmaceutical products. He noted that roughly 70 percent of medicines consumed locally are imported, urging the federal government to aggressively develop domestic pharmaceutical industries to secure true national independence.

Bugaje further warned of a deepening social crisis within Muslim communities, citing a sharp rise in drug abuse among women and youths as an existential threat to the region`s socio-economic future.
