A 15-year-old boy, Gobri Yusuf, has been apprehended by the Kwara State Police command for allegedly killing his guardian known as Akanbi that adopted and raised him in Ilorin, the state capital. The suspect allegedly attacked his guardian after his initial poison plot failed. The Commissioner of Police in the state, Adekimi Ojo, explained on Friday during a press briefing at the command’s headquarters in Ilorin that the suspect was apprehended following a distress report received by the police over the discovery of Akanbi in a pool of blood at her residence. The Commissioner of Police said, “Preliminary findings from the investigation revealed that the suspect who lived with the deceased, allegedly carried out the attack while the victim was bathing.” He added that findings revealed that the suspect, who was residing with the deceased, allegedly concealed himself behind a door and attacked her while she was bathing using household items. Items recovered from the suspect, according to the Ojo included a frying pan, a weighing scale, a kitchen turning stick (spatula), and kitchen knives. The suspect, he explained confessed to the crime during interrogation, saying that the act was allegedly driven by resentment towards the deceased. After allegedly committing the crime, the Commissioner stated that the suspect changed his clothes and left the residence under the pretext of running an errand. He also explained that the boy later contacted the deceased’s husband, who subsequently discovered her lifeless body. The commissioner explained that investigation is ongoing while the suspect remains in police custody.

Nollywood actor, Olanrewaju Omiyinka, professionally known as Baba Ijesha, has stated that human beings are more wicked than snakes. He stated this three months after he was released from a Lagos State prison where he served time following his conviction on allegations of sexual assault levelled against him by colleague and comedian, Damilola Adekoya, better known as Princess. Recall that Prince had in 2021 accused Baba Ijesha of sexually assaulting her 14-year-old foster daughter at her residence. Speaking for the first time after his release, the actor in a viral music video, accused Princess of framing him up. While insisting that the incident was a set up by Princess who was his close friend, the actor lamented being betrayed by those he truly trusted. He said, “My trust was betrayed, I ended up in Kirikiri prison because of a woman. She asked them to silence me, so that my voice must not be heard. This is how it happened. Princess she devil who was my friend called me that she’s preparing my favorite food, pounded yam, egusi soup with bush meat. That was how I got captured, the world is wicked. The main offender is walking freely while they want an innocent man to be killed. That’s how I got to Kirikiri. “Please my fans be careful with friends. They cannot be trusted. The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man accused of selling his sister’s one-month-old baby for N2 million. It was gathered that the suspect, who resides in Igbogbo in the Ikorodu area of the state, allegedly claimed he sold the infant to raise funds for their mother’s burial. The baby’s mother later reported the incident to the police, prompting the suspect’s arrest. The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Panti, for further investigation. Speaking with newsmen in Lagos on Friday, the suspect, who admitted to the act, attributed his actions to financial hardship. He explained that he came in contact with the woman who purchased the baby through Facebook. “Poverty pushed me into doing it. My sister initially agreed to the arrangement,” he said. According to him, the woman seeking a child asked him to bring the baby to Mile 2 after their discussions. “I went there with my sister. A man sent by the buyer collected the baby, and the woman transferred N2 million into my bank account,” he said. The suspect added that he gave his sister N500,000 from the proceeds, while the remaining amount was used to organise their mother’s burial. He further claimed that after the burial, his sister began demanding that the baby be returned, alleging that he had used charms to influence her to agree to the sale. “My sister later claimed she was unaware that the baby had been sold and reported the matter to the police, which led to my arrest,” he said. The suspect said he did not know the buyer personally and had no details about her residence, adding that attempts to reach her through the phone number used during the transaction had been unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of SCID, Dayo Akinbisehin, confirmed that investigations into the matter are ongoing. He noted that the suspect would be arraigned in court once the investigation is concluded.

The governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has told anyone who wishes to run for the governorship of the state to start their campaign in earnest. The governor also urged them to do so on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, despite the crisis rocking the party’s internal structures. The PDP has been in jeopardy since the 2023 general elections, with almost everyone of significance in the party abandoning it for other parties. The PDP has lost almost all its lawmakers and governors to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, the latest being the governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Fintiri. The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has confirmed that four police officers have been dismissed from the force over their alleged involvement in the killing of seven traders in the Owode Onirin area of Lagos State. Speaking with journalists at the Ikeja Police Officers’ Mess, the police chief disclosed that investigations into the tragic incident are still ongoing. According to him, the officers who were dismissed had been brought into the state from Nasarawa State by the prime suspect identified as Ariori, and were allegedly involved in the unlawful killings. Jimoh assured members of the public that the command remains committed to ensuring justice for the victims, adding that key evidence, including ballistic and autopsy reports, will support the prosecution of those responsible. “This matter has not been swept under the carpet, and we want the public and the families of the victims to know that nothing will stop the police from ensuring that justice is served. “We will leave no stone unturned and will not be intimidated by anyone. All suspects will face prosecution, and the courts are open to hear every case,” he said. The commissioner stressed that the Nigeria Police Force remains dedicated to its constitutional responsibility of maintaining law and order, noting that no individual or group would be allowed to obstruct the process of justice. He added that about 98 per cent of the investigation has been completed, assuring residents that the police will continue to take decisive steps to safeguard lives and property across the state. Jimoh also urged residents and traders to remain vigilant while cooperating with law enforcement authorities, reiterating the command’s commitment to public safety. Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested a 27-year-old man, Kazeem Awe, for allegedly killing a nursing mother in Ore, the headquarters of Odigbo Local Council Area of the state. Awe, son of the landlord of the victim, allegedly attacked the deceased, Motunrayo Adeleye, with a cutlass following a dispute over unpaid rent at their residence in the Alaba axis of the community. The suspect, during the violent dispute, also injured the husband of the deceased, Mathew Adeleye, as well as their daughter. The incident reportedly occurred around 5:00 a.m. in the Ore Alaba area, beside a popular school, throwing the usually peaceful neighbourhood into confusion as frightened residents scampered for safety. According to sources, the violence was triggered by a lingering disagreement over house rent between the suspect and the deceased’s husband, a tenant in a building owned by the suspect’s father While speaking on his hospital bed, the husband of the deceased stated that the issue began when tenants residing in the building were served quit notices, despite their rents not yet being due. “I had informed friends to help us search for another apartment, and we eventually secured one. We were preparing to move out that same Thursday the incident occurred,” he stated. While confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, Abayomi Jimoh, stated that the victims were rushed to the General Hospital, Ore, where the deceased was confirmed dead by medical personnel. The spokesperson disclosed that the other two victims are currently receiving treatment while the body of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital’s mortuary.

A 43-year-old man has been arrested in Sepeteri, Oyo State, for allegedly beating his elder brother to death with a heavy rock because he claimed the deceased shot him in a dream. Lateef Suleiman, of Alegunlode Compound, Sepeteri, reportedly woke up convinced that his 52-year-old brother, Mustapha Amidu, had attacked him in his sleep while in a dream. According to a statement on Tuesday by Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, rather than shake it off, Suleiman allegedly picked up a heavy rock and struck his brother on the head before fleeing. The statement read, “One Badmus Yunisa ‘m’ of Alegunlode Compound, Sepeteri, reported that Lateef Suleiman ‘m’, aged 43 years, attacked his elder brother, Mustapha Amidu ‘m’, aged 52 years, following an accusation that the deceased had shot him in a dream while he was asleep the previous night. “Acting on this claim, the suspect allegedly approached the deceased where he was seated, picked up a heavy rock, struck him on the head, and fled the scene immediately.” Mustapha was rushed to Ileri Oluwa Hospital, Sepeteri but did not make it. The command said he was “confirmed dead by the medical doctor on duty.” Police operatives from the Ago-Amodu Divisional Headquarters moved quickly, visiting both the scene and the hospital. The command described these as “preliminary investigative procedures.” Suleiman was subsequently tracked down and arrested. He has since confessed, the command said, adding that he “is currently cooperating with investigators.” Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, ordered the case transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department. The command said it would be a “discreet and comprehensive investigation.” It assured the public, saying “justice will be pursued diligently and in accordance with the law.

The Federal Government on Tuesday formally prohibited cash collection of taxes and banned the mounting of roadblocks for revenue enforcement, as part of fresh regulations to implement Nigeria’s new tax laws nationwide. The disclosure was made in Abuja by the Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board, Mr Olusegun Adesokan, during the signing of the Presumptive Tax Regulations and Guidelines on the Implementation of the Tax Laws at the Federal Ministry of Finance. Adesokan said the new framework was designed to end informal, coercive and fragmented tax practices, particularly at the subnational level. “It bans all forms of cash collection by tax authorities. It also bans the mounting of roadblocks for the collection of taxes,” he said. He explained that the regulations would entrench transparency and equity in tax administration, especially within the commerce and informal sectors. “These regulations are another demonstration of his commitment to taxing prosperity and not poverty,” Adesokan said, referring to the reform agenda of the Federal Government. According to him, nano and small businesses with an annual turnover of N12m and below would be exempted under the presumptive tax regime. “Our nano and small businesses with an annual turnover of N12m and below are exempted from tax,” he stated. He added that the framework introduced a one per cent tax rate on turnover for other categories of informal businesses, while encouraging the use of technology-driven payment systems. “It also introduces a tax rate of one per cent of turnover on all other categories of informal businesses,” he said. Adesokan noted that the guidelines provided a uniform structure for subnational governments in taxing the commerce sector and integrating operators into the formal system through a Tax Identification platform. “These regulations constitute the framework for taxing the commerce sector,” he said, adding that the alignment of states behind the framework signalled a coordinated national approach. Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, said the signing marked a transition from legislative approval to operational enforcement of the tax reforms enacted in 2025 and early 2026. “With the signing of these regulations, we are transitioning from regulation to structured implementation of the tax reforms,” Edun said. He described the regulations as a simple and transparent framework for applying presumptive tax, stressing that they were anchored on “transparency, fairness, clarity, indeed, equity, and economic inclusion for Nigerians.” “Our aim is to ensure consistency, prevent arbitrary assessments… and to protect small businesses while ensuring the continuous growth of the Nigerian economy,” the minister said. Edun maintained that the reforms were not intended to raise tax rates but to broaden the tax base in a structured manner. “We’ll expand the tax base, not raising taxes, but expanding so that each bears his rightful contribution to the common cause,” he said. He said the regulations were developed in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board to ensure alignment across federal, state and local governments. “Our role is to ensure that tax administrations are coordinated, not fragmented, and deliver results and impact to all Nigerians,” he stated. The minister linked the reforms to the government’s broader growth objectives, noting that economic expansion had exceeded four per cent in the last quarter of 2025 but required further acceleration. “We’re looking at, in the immediate term, to try to get to seven per cent GDP growth on our way to Mr President’s clear-stated target… by 2030, the $1tn economy,” Edun said. He assured stakeholders that implementation would be closely monitored to safeguard fairness, adding that an ombudsman mechanism had been introduced. “Implementation will be monitored carefully. Fairness in practice… there’s an ombudsman to keep an eye on fair implementation of the tax laws,” he said. In his closing remarks, the Chairman of the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee, Mr Joseph Tegbe, described the signing as a decisive shift from policy intention to practical execution. “With the signing of the presumptive tax guidelines, we have moved from legal provisions to operational reality,” Tegbe said. He stressed that the reforms were not about imposing new burdens but correcting distortions in the system. “It’s not about imposing new volumes but restoring order where there has been fragmentation and replacing arbitrariness with transparency,” he said. Tegbe observed that the informal sector employs more than 80 per cent of Nigeria’s workforce but has historically contributed little to structured public revenue due to systemic weaknesses. “The informal sector… employs more than 80 per cent of the workforce… yet its contribution to structured public revenue has been disproportionately low, not because they are unwilling to pay but because our framework was either too complex or did not reflect operational realities,” he said. He added that sustainable development required sustainable revenue mobilisation and that the committee would work with tax authorities to ensure disciplined and transparent rollout of the new framework. “With today’s signing, we move decisively from intention to execution,” Tegbe said. In June, 2025, President Bola Tinubu signed four sweeping tax reform bills into law, including the Nigeria Tax Act and related statutes that together overhaul decades-old tax statutes and modernise the country’s tax system.

I’m sincerely sorry for such an insensitive statement that I made on the Honest Bunch podcast. I’m not someone who would be too proud or very insensitive to apologize when he makes mistakes. “I had looked at that statement and I think it is quite insensitive to those who have had an issue with kidnapping, relatives been killed and all that. I want to sincerely and unreservedly tender an apology to those who that statement has hurt. I believe that statement is very insensitive”, he said. The Federal Government through the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, NCPC, on Tuesday announced the immediate suspension of all pilgrimages to Israel due to the security situation in the Middle East. The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Stephen Adegbite, made the disclosure in Lagos during a press briefing shortly after 500 pilgrims landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport from the 2025 Main Pilgrimage exercise. The pilgrimage exercise began December 29, 2025, with the inaugural flight departing from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. In total, more than 4,000 Nigerian Christian pilgrims were airlifted to the Holy Land without any reported incident. According to the NCPC boss, the Commission deployed a Boeing 777-300 aircraft with a 525 seating capacity for the operation. It was the largest aircraft ever used for Christian pilgrimage airlift in Nigeria. However, he said recent military developments in the region have compelled the Commission to suspend further pilgrimages. “You are aware of the latest security developments in Israel and the wider Middle East. “In view of the state of emergency declared by Israeli authorities and restrictions on public gatherings, the Commission has decided to put on hold all pilgrimages both by the Commission and private operators until the security situation normalises,” he said. Adegbite emphasised that the safety and welfare of Nigerian pilgrims remain paramount, noting that the Commission is closely monitoring the situation. He cautioned Nigerians against engaging in protests or actions that could escalate tensions arising from the crisis. According to him, the suspension of pilgrimage activities will remain in force until international travel to Israel is deemed safe. “The Federal Government places premium on peace and security. We therefore advise Nigerians to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could undermine national security or diplomatic relations,” he added. Adegbite equally expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for what he described as unprecedented support for both Christian and Muslim pilgrimages. He also acknowledged the contributions made by First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, that led to the successful completion of the 2025 exercise. Adegbite urged Christians and peace advocates to continue praying for stability in Jerusalem and across the Middle East to prevent a humanitarian crisis.
