Medical experts have advised adults to get between seven and nine hours of sleep daily to maintain good physical and mental health. A Consultant Family and Lifestyle Medicine Physician, Dr Moyosore Makinde, gave the advice on Friday in Lagos while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria to mark World Sleep Day. Makinde, who is also the President of the Society of Lifestyle Medicine of Nigeria, said adequate sleep plays a vital role in maintaining overall wellbeing, productivity and long-term health. The 2026 World Sleep Day, themed “Sleep Well, Live Better,” is dedicated to raising awareness about sleep’s critical role in human health and encouraging individuals to adopt healthier sleep habits. Makinde explained that recommended sleep duration varies by age, noting that while adults require fewer hours, infants and children need longer sleep periods for proper development and overall well-being. Citing World Health Organisation stipulations, Makinde recommended seven to nine hours of restorative sleep for adults above 18, explaining that infants and children required significantly longer sleep duration. She decried the high level of sleep deprivation among the populace, noting many people failed to get adequate sleep daily, a situation she warned could negatively affect health, safety and well-being. Makinde said the fast pace of modern life often left little time for rest, urging Nigerians to deliberately prioritise sleep by creating time for proper rest, relaxation and recovery daily. She attributed sleep deprivation to multiple factors, including health challenges, lack of time, social media addiction, poor sleeping environments, unhealthy sleep positions, and demanding daily schedules aimed at survival. According to Makinde, prolonged sleep deprivation increases risks of accidents, judgment errors, workplace mistakes, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, obesity, overweight, and certain cancers, including breast and prostate. “Sleeping well in order to live better is not a myth. Sleep remains one of the most powerful yet often neglected pillars of health and well-being in modern society. “To maintain good health, adults should have seven to nine restorative hours of sleep per day. “Infants require up to 16 to 17 hours of sleep, while pre-school and school-age children need up to 13 hours and 12 hours, respectively, for proper brain development,” Makinde added. According to her, sleep is as important as the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. “It is a natural state of rest and a period when the body repairs itself physiologically, restoring energy, strengthening immunity and supporting overall bodily functions. “Amid the hustle and bustle of work, study and business, particularly in Lagos, Nigerians need to prioritise sleep. “In doing so, we are also prioritising our health,” she said. Contributing, a psychiatrist and therapist, Dr Maymunah Kadiri, described sleep as “an integral part of mental well-being,” stressing its critical role in maintaining psychological balance. Kadiri, also Medical Director of Pinnacle Medical Services, explained that good sleep improved concentration, enhanced brain performance and contributed positively to overall cognitive functioning and emotional stability. She noted that adequate sleep supported cognitive processes and helped reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, making it an essential component of maintaining good mental health. According to her, healthy sleep goes beyond hours spent in bed, noting that it involves adequate duration, good sleep quality that is uninterrupted and refreshing, and a consistent sleep schedule. “Sleep significantly benefits mental health. During a good night’s sleep, the brain gets rest and all the nutrients it needs. “A person who enjoys long-term good sleep develops improved stress resistance. Brain function improves, and the risk of cognitive disorders is significantly reduced over time. “Sleep has a direct impact on mental health and its quality. It helps process emotions and alleviates stress as well as negative feelings,” Kadiri said.

Kehinde Adegbodu, one-half of the Yoruba gospel music duo popularly known as Adegbodu Twins, has explained how his twin brother, Taiwo Adegbodu died. This is coming a week after Taiwo’s sudden death. However, narrating the tragic incident to a group of visitors at their residence in Ibadan, Kehinde stated that Kehinde was never sick. Narrating their final hours together before the sad incident, Kehinde revealed that Taiwo died from a heart attack some minutes after complaining of chest pain. Speaking in a viral video on social media, he explained “we went to our separate rooms after our every night routine prayers at 9:pm on Saturday February 28. He came to knock at my door at 10:55pm that he was having chest pains, and I drove him to the hospital immediately and he died a few minutes later. He was never sick.

Nigerian economic reports Aviation policy consulting Scores of residents on Tuesday staged a protest that disrupted vehicular and human movement at the Jobele end of the Ibadan–Oyo Expressway in Afijio Local Government Area of Oyo State over rising cases of kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities. The protesters blocked the busy highway, causing traffic gridlock and drawing attention to the growing insecurity in the area. THENEWSCREDIT investigation revealed that the protest was triggered by the recent invasion of one of the communities by suspected kidnappers. The protesters alleged that the attackers attempted to abduct a woman on Monday, but she narrowly escaped by scaling a fence. “Yesterday (Monday), suspected kidnappers invaded one of our communities in an attempt to abduct a lady. She managed to escape by scaling the fence, but she sustained a deep machete cut on one of her hands,” one of the protesters said. He added that the incident was not the first in the area and warned that residents would not leave the road until their safety was guaranteed by security agencies. “We are not going to leave the road until the safety of residents is assured by the relevant security agencies,” the protesters insisted. Meanwhile, Dolapo Awotunde, a representative of Ward 8, said Afijio Local Government Area had recorded at least seven kidnapping incidents in recent times. In a statement, Awotunde said the latest attack occurred between Saturday night and Sunday morning, leaving one victim severely injured. “It is no longer news that kidnapping has become rampant in Afijio Local Government Area, particularly in Jobele. The community has recorded not fewer than seven kidnapping-related incidents recently,” the statement read. “During the latest attack, a victim was brutally wounded by the perpetrators. He was rushed to the General Hospital and later referred to Ogbomoso for advanced treatment. Unfortunately, one of his hands had to be amputated due to the severity of the injuries.” According to him, following the incident, residents organised a vigilante watch on Sunday night into Monday morning to protect the community. He said at about 1 a.m. on Monday, residents apprehended a suspicious individual allegedly found in possession of a gun, a cutlass and other dangerous weapons. “In good faith and as law-abiding citizens, the suspect was handed over to the police at the Jobele Police Station for proper investigation and prosecution,” he said. Interview skills workshops However, Awotunde alleged that residents later discovered the suspect had been released without explanation. “When community members visited the police station this morning to inquire about the suspect, they were shocked to learn that he had already been released without any explanation and without involving those who apprehended him,” the statement added. He said the development sparked outrage among residents and students, prompting them to block the Old Oyo–Ibadan Road and the Ibadan–Oyo–Ogbomoso Highway while demanding answers from the authorities. Awotunde called on the Nigeria Police Force, the Oyo State Police Command and the Oyo State Government to urgently investigate the matter and address the worsening insecurity in Afijio Local Government Area. When contacted, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, said the Commissioner of Police had deployed senior officers to the area. “The Commissioner of Police has sent the Area Commander and the Divisional Police Officer to the scene to restore normalcy on the road,” Ayanlade said.

An Ekiti State High Court, Ado Ekiti Division, on Tuesday sentenced a quack nurse, Olatide Emmanuel, to death by hanging over the killing of a woman. The 48-year-old was arraigned in 2025 on a two-count charge bordering on murder and impersonation. The charge reads, “That the defendant, on 24th June, 2019 at Odo Ikole compound, Erinmope Ekiti, did murder one Bosede Falade, and also on June 9, 2019 at Ajebamidele Street, Otun Ekiti did falsely represent himself to be a medical doctor.” Prosecutor Kunle-Shina Adeyemo said, “The offences are contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319(1) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.” An eyewitness, Rev. Omotade, told police that the deceased’s husband had called him to report that his wife had died during childbirth. Omotade said: “On getting to the hospital, I saw the corpse on the stretcher while the self-acclaimed doctor stood beside the stretcher. When I critically examined the body of the deceased, I discovered that the operation was carried out unprofessionally. I later called the police at Otun Ekiti to take over the matter and carry out a full investigation,” he said. The defendant told the court he had set up a clinic in Erinmope Ekiti in 2019 after completing a nursing apprenticeship in Lagos State. He claimed,”The deceased was not my patient but came to inform me that she was due for childbirth. After some examination, I informed her and her husband that she would be delivered of the baby through a Caesarean section, and they agreed. “The operation was successful with both mother and child alive, but the mother developed complications thereafter and later died,” he said. The prosecutor called seven witnesses and tendered statements, medical reports, and photographs of the deceased as exhibits. The defendant, through his counsel Adeyinka Opaleke, did not call any witnesses. In his judgment, Justice Jubril Aladejana said, “The confession of the defendant under cross-examination that he did not qualify as medical personnel, yet proceeded to open up a human being, knowing he had no training or certification to do so, portrayed the defendant as inherently callous. I find the defendant wickedly reckless in his actions on the now deceased Bosede Falade. “The prosecution has proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the reckless action of the defendant caused the woman’s death on 24th June, 2019. The defendant is accordingly found guilty as charged.” The judge concluded,”The judgment of this court is that you, Olatide Emmanuel, be hanged by the neck until you are dead. May the Lord have mercy on your soul.”

President Bola Tinubu is hosting Christian and Muslim clerics alongside traditional rulers to an interfaith breaking of fast at the State House, Abuja. The event, which began at 7pm at the Presidential Banquet Hall, is bringing together religious leaders and monarchs from across the country as Muslims and Christians observe Ramadan and Lent respectively. The interfaith dinner is part of the President’s annual Ramadan tradition of hosting key stakeholders, including political leaders, religious figures, and traditional institutions during the holy month. In similar gatherings in the first week of Ramadan, Tinubu hosted governors and lawmakers, where he emphasised the urgency for the creation of state police. The President is expected to host additional Iftar gatherings with members of the diplomatic corps, and other stakeholders before the end of Ramadan. Muslims are currently in the last ten days of Ramadan, which include the Night of Power (Laylatul Qadr), while Christians continue the Lenten fasting leading to Easter.

The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a 26-year-old woman, identified as Precious Mogaji, in Ibadan, the state capital. A statement issued on Monday by the command’s spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, said investigations have begun to determine the circumstances surrounding her death. According to Ayanlade, the incident was reported by a good Samaritan who found the victim lying lifeless at the entrance of her boyfriend’s room. The boyfriend, Quadri Mohammed, aged 29, is currently at large. The Police Public Relations Officer clarified that the killing occurred in the Oguntula area of Ojoo, Ibadan, and not in Akobo as initially reported in some media outlets. “The Oyo State Police command has commenced investigation into the alleged murder of a victim, one Precious Mogaji ‘F’, aged 26 years. “Preliminary investigation in this regard reveals that at about 0005hrs, the incident was brought to the attention of the Police by a good Samaritan who reported that the victim was found lying lifeless at the entrance of the room of her boyfriend, Quadri Mohammed ‘M’, aged 29 years. “Contrary to the false narrative circulating in some sections of the media alleging that the incident occurred at Akobo and involved a husband attempting to place the corpse of his wife in the trunk of a car, preliminary findings indicate that the incident actually occurred at the Oguntula area of Ojoo, Ibadan, and not Akobo as widely reported. “Consequently, the command considers it necessary to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident in order to set the record straight. Acting promptly on the information received, the Patrol Team and Incident Duty Officer of Ojoo Division were swiftly dispatched to the scene. “Upon arrival, the lifeless body of the victim was discovered on the floor at the doorway of the suspect’s room. The body was forensically examined and findings duly documented in line with established investigative procedures and laid down rules. “Following the preliminary examination, the scene was properly documented and photographs were taken. Thereafter, the corpse was evacuated by the Police to a hospital where it has been deposited at the morgue for autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. “In the course of the investigation, it was discovered that the said boyfriend, Quadri Mohammed, is currently at large. Investigation is ongoing, while concerted efforts are being intensified to apprehend the suspect.” The command urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the nearest Police station or the state Police command. It also assured the public that further updates will be provided and asked them to disregard misleading reports circulating on social media.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to abandon their egos and prioritize reconciliation over further litigation. ​ Wike made this call on Monday after the appellate court dismissed the appeal brought before it by the Taminu Turaki-led faction of the party. He described the ruling regarding the PDP’s Ibadan convention as a victory for the rule of law. According to him, the court’s decision to dismiss several appeals with heavy costs underscores the necessity of adhering to statutory provisions, the Electoral Act, and the party’s own constitution. The former Rivers State Governor stressed that the violation of the laws removes a matter from being a mere internal affair of the party and justifies judicial intervention. He, therefore, warned that dragging the case to the Supreme Court would be self-destructive, urging aggrieved members to see the judgment as an opportunity to chart the way forward. “For me, it is an opportunity for everybody today to come back and see how we can salvage the party. “Leave your ego. Leave your personal interests. Come back. Let’s sit down. Now we are here, can we see how we can forge ahead”, he asked.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has again increased the price of the Premium Motor Spirit, PMS, marking the third upward adjustment within a week. ​ The refinery made the announcement of the price hike to marketers on Monday, raising the gantry price of Premium Motor Spirit to N1,175 per litre from N995 per litre announced on Friday. This is said to represent an increase of N180 or about 18.1 per cent within three days. The refinery equally revised the gantry price of Automotive Gas Oil, commonly known as diesel, to N1,620 per litre. THENEWSCREDIT had reported that the refinery recently increased its PMS to N995 per liter, up from N874 at the weekend, a hike that has pushed fuel pump price to above N1,000 per liter nationwide.

Dangote Refinery’s Premium Motor Spirit gantry price increase to N995 per liter, up from N874 at the weekend, has further pushed fuel retail pumps nationwide to above N1,000 per liter. This followed its earlier N100 per liter petrol price hike, which the $20 billion refinery attributed to the crude oil price volatility caused by the war in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Dangote Refinery’s latest price hike further makes imported fuel N185.17 per liter cheaper, according to the Major Energies Marketers Association’s March 2, 2026, industrial price data. Dangote Refinery’s price hike has triggered MRS, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, and other filling stations in Abuja to raise their petrol pump price between N967 and as high as N1,010 per liter as of Saturday.
