The Federal Government is facing intense labor pressure as civil servants demand an immediate increase in the national minimum wage to N300,000 per month.

The Federal Workers Forum (FWF) made the formal demand in a letter dated September 2, 2026, addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the leadership of the National Assembly. The forum declared that the current N70,000 minimum wage has been completely eroded by Nigeria’s skyrocketing cost of living.

Under the workers` proposed salary structure, the lowest-earning civil servant (Level 1, Step 1) would receive N300,000, while the highest-paid bureaucrats (Level 17 officers) would top out at a monthly salary of N1.5 million.

The FWF criticized the Federal Government for failing to fully execute the previous wage agreement passed over two years ago. According to the forum, federal workers are still battling for the full implementation of consequential adjustments and associated allowances.

"It will surprise you to hear that the Federal Government has not fully implemented the new national minimum wage since July 2024," the statement read. "We have been in the battle for full consequential adjustment."

This fresh agitation follows a recent demand by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in August 2026, which pushed for an even higher baseline of N500,000.

Although President Tinubu approved an increase from N30,000 to N70,000 in July 2024, hyperinflation has severely devalued the currency. The cost of living for average Nigerian households has effectively tripled between 2024 and 2026, rendering the current salary structure unsustainable.
