A 52-year-old man, Alaba Ayeni, has been found dead inside a domestic well near Lamp Bearers Islamic School, off Asa-Dam Road in Ilorin, Kwara State.

The tragedy was confirmed on Tuesday by the Kwara State Fire Service in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Hassan Adekunle.

According to the agency, neighborhood children first spotted Mr. Ayeni inside the well, which was located close to his residence. The children immediately raised an alarm, alerting community elders who then contacted emergency services.

The Fire Service received the distress call and arrived at the scene at approximately 8:42 AM to commence a recovery operation.

"Our firefighters commenced a recovery operation and successfully recovered the body of the deceased, identified as Alaba Ayeni, aged 52," Adekunle stated.

As of Tuesday, the exact circumstances leading to how Mr. Ayeni ended up inside the well remain unknown. Following the successful retrieval, the firefighters formally handed the body over to Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Bolaji of the Budo-Nuhu Police Station for further investigation.

Reacting to the incident, the Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, expressed deep concern over the tragedy. He urged residents across the state to properly secure and cover domestic wells and open water sources. Furthermore, he advised parents, guardians, and community leaders to monitor children closely and prevent them from wandering unattended near potentially hazardous areas like wells and drainage channels.

While commiserating with the bereaved family and the local community, the Fire Service reiterated its steadfast commitment to responding promptly to emergencies and safeguarding lives and property across Kwara State.
