A young Nigerian, Samuel Ezekiel, has shared a harrowing account of how his trusted friend, Emmanuel Odeh, deceived him into selling his kidney, only to squander the dollar proceeds on luxury gadgets and hotel stays.

Ezekiel spoke on Friday during a media parade organized by the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja. The event showcased members of an alleged high-profile organ-harvesting syndicate operating across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Nasarawa State.

Ezekiel revealed that his ordeal began when Odeh invited him to a hospital under false pretenses. Due to blind trust, Ezekiel complied without questioning the destination.

Odeh allegedly connected Ezekiel with a handler named David, who passed him to a main agent identified as Ben for medical compatibility tests. To bypass legal and medical checks, the syndicate forced Ezekiel to undergo a fraudulent name change.

"They told me they were going to change my name to Hassan Abubakar," Ezekiel explained. "From there, they took us to the Federal High Court to secure a falsified affidavit before moving to Wellington Hospital in Life Camp, Abuja."

According to the victim, the organ recipients paid him in cash right before he entered the operating theatre late at night on April 24. Unable to hold the money himself, Ezekiel handed the envelope—filled with $100 and $50 bills—to Odeh for safekeeping.

When Ezekiel woke up from the surgery, he discovered his friend had already converted the foreign currency to Naira and spent a significant portion on electronics.

"He went ahead to change the money and bought two phones, two power banks, and two Wi-Fi devices. He kept one set and gave me the other," Ezekiel narrated.

After a week of recovery at the hospital, Odeh allegedly moved Ezekiel to an Abuja hotel for two days before relocating him to Cross River State. They stayed there for three months. When Ezekiel finally demanded the remainder of his money, Odeh informed him that the entire sum had been spent.

Worse still, Odeh allegedly confiscated and sold Ezekiel`s new phone just to raise their transportation fare back to Abuja.

When questioned by reporters on whether he knew the gravity of the surgery, Ezekiel admitted he was informed but claimed Odeh heavily downplayed the risks.

"He told me they would just convert it and that there would be no issues at all. He assured me I could still do everything I wanted to do afterward," the victim said.

The Nigeria Police Force launched an intensive investigation into the cartel after social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan, exposed the case. A young man had approached his non-governmental organization with medical scans proving his left kidney had been illegally removed.

A subsequent police sting operation in the Auta Balefi area of Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, led to the collapse of the network.

Police have paraded prominent medical professionals and an alleged syndicate recruiter linked to a criminal case alongside an individual named Odeh. The suspects include Wellington Hospital consultants Dr. Benjamin Oyime and Dr. Daniel Otukpa, as well as alleged coordinator David Idoko. The police high command stated that the criminal network actively targets vulnerable young Nigerians, using forged court documents and identity theft to facilitate illegal surgical procedures. Investigations remain ongoing to apprehend fleeing members of the syndicate
