President Bola Tinubu has transmitted a new bill to the Senate seeking to restructure and strengthen the administration of public senior secondary schools across Nigeria. The National Senior Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aims to improve academic governance, elevate learning standards, and reinforce the commission`s operational frameworks. By updating the existing legal structure, the presidency intends to drive uniform academic excellence and accountability across all thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The legislative request was contained in an official executive communication read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Thursday`s plenary session. In the letter, President Tinubu detailed the administrative trajectory of the bill, noting that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) had thoroughly debated and approved the amendment during its cabinet meeting on April 30, 2026.

According to the president, the proposed legislation is a direct reflection of his administration`s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes human capital development. He emphasized that building stronger educational institutions is vital to improving student learning outcomes and equipping the youth to drive long-term national development.

In a strong appeal to the federal lawmakers, President Tinubu urged the upper legislative chamber to accord the bill accelerated consideration.
