Media personality Toke Makinwa has sparked intense public debate after claiming that a significant number of Nigerian men lack emotional depth and rely too heavily on financial provision in relationships.

Speaking on the latest episode of the MENtality podcast, hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the prominent actress and TV host argued that many men substitute monetary generosity for genuine emotional intelligence and communication.

According to Makinwa, the widespread stereotype that Nigerian women are overly materialistic is actually a culture created by men who use wealth as their primary dating tool.

"Nigerian men don’t have games aside from money," Makinwa stated during the podcast. "Once a Nigerian man makes money, he starts throwing it at the hottest girls. Sometimes, you meet a man and you want to know him but he is offering you money."

Makinwa further asserted that relationships have historically carried transactional elements, but blamed men for accelerating the trend in modern dating. She argued that women learned to prioritize material benefits because men repeatedly signal that cash is the most valuable asset they bring to the table.

"Men have offered women the strangest things, and it made me realise that men feel cash is all they need to show you. Most girls who are materialistic today, men taught them how to make demands," she added.

The media personality`s blunt commentary has triggered a wave of mixed reactions across social media platforms. While some commentators validated her views, agreeing that emotional connection is frequently ignored in contemporary dating, others criticized her remarks as an unfair generalization of Nigerian men.
