OGBOMOSO — As Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) successfully concluded its 18th Convocation ceremonies today, university management has urged the public to disregard unverified reports circulating online regarding the death of a graduate during the celebrations. While unconfirmed claims about a graduate named "Tomisin" dying during a football match have appeared on social media, there has been no official confirmation from the university registrar, public relations office, or reputable media outlets. The viral rumours appear to stem from confusion with a recent, high-profile tragedy at Covenant University, not LAUTECH. On April 6, 2026, Toluwase Jesutunmise Emmanuel, a 500-level Building Technology student at Covenant University, tragically slumped and died during a football training session on campus. Additionally, LAUTECH recently mourned the loss of six final-year Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Nursing students who died in a ghastly motor accident on the Ilorin-Ogbomoso Road in February 2026 while traveling for their final examinations. The week-long 18th Convocation event, which began on April 16, 2026, culminated today with the award of postgraduate and honorary degrees. A total of 10,223 students were awarded degrees during this session. Meanwhile,137 students achieved First Class degrees. Oladepo Caleb Olugbenga from the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering emerged as the overall best graduating student with a perfect CGPA of 4.89. The University Management, led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Razaq Olatunde Rom Kalilu, has been fully engaged in the convocation activities and has not issued any statements acknowledging new fatalities during the graduation week.
