Man, 20, Held for Allegedly Killing Father with Machete in Anambra

Residents of Abatete community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State have been thrown into mourning following the brutal murder of a 56-year-old man, allegedly by his own son. The suspect, identified as 20-year-old Pascal Ogbogu, reportedly attacked his father with a machete on Tuesday evening, leaving the community in complete shock and disbelief. The gruesome incident occurred on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, when an argument allegedly ensued between the father and son. According to local sources, the confrontation escalated rapidly, leading the suspect to slice his father`s throat with a sharp machete. After committing the heinous crime, the young man reportedly hid the remains in a room and fled the scene. The lifeless body of the deceased was discovered in a pool of blood with a deep machete wound to the throat, following a search by anxious family members. The discovery triggered immediate panic, prompting a swift distress call to the law enforcement agencies and the local security apparatus. Responding to the distress report, police operatives from the Eziowelle Police Division, alongside members of the Abatete community vigilante and family members, launched a coordinated manhunt. Through timely information sharing and community cooperation, security forces successfully tracked down and arrested the fleeing suspect in the early hours of Wednesday, August 26, 2026. The Anambra State Police Command confirmed the tragic incident in an official statement issued on Wednesday by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga. The statement indicated that preliminary investigations revealed the suspect committed the crime on Tuesday evening, and the victim`s remains have since been evacuated to the mortuary for preservation and autopsy. Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Ama, highly commended the community members and local vigilantes for their prompt response and collaborative efforts which led to the swift arrest of the suspect. He emphasized that strong partnerships between the public and police remain vital to effective policing and protecting lives. While commiserating with the bereaved family, CP Nnanna Ama directed that the case be immediately transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive review. The state police boss assured the public that a thorough, professional investigation will be conducted to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The Police Command further guaranteed that the suspect will face the full wrath of the law and be prosecuted in accordance with due process once investigations are finalized. Meanwhile, tension remains high in the Abatete community as residents demand justice for the deceased father.
