Archival footage has surfaced showing the late veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, widely known as Ogogo, performing traditional chant rites during the 1990 burial procession of Nigerian theatre pioneer, Chief Hubert Ogunde.

The newly surfaced clip, shared online via the Ogunde Museum archives by researcher Yemi King, captures a solemn moment during the lying-in-state ceremony held at the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, on May 3, 1990.

In the video, a young Ogogo recites Oríkì (Yoruba praise poetry) alongside fellow theatre icon Dr. Ishola Ogunsola (I-Show Pepper), who led the dirge on behalf of the Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners (ANTP).

Ogunde, revered as the father of contemporary Nigerian theatre and producer of classic films like Aiye and Jaiyesinmi, died in London on April 4, 1990.

The historical clip gains poignant significance following Ogogo`s death on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the age of 66 after a battle with stage-four cancer. He was laid to rest in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, on Monday, August 24, following Islamic rites at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground.

Ogunsola (I-Show Pepper) passed away shortly after the recorded event on December 28, 1992.

The throwback clip—captioned with the Yoruba proverb "Òkú ń sunkún òkú, Akáṣọlérí ń sunkún ara wọn" (The dead weep for the dead)—immortalizes Ogogo early in his career paying final respects to a legend, decades before he himself would be laid to rest as one of Yoruba cinema`s most revered figures.
