Published on Wed 03 Jun 2026

Popular gospel artist Yinka Alaseyori has formally apologized to Nigerians after facing intense online criticism for her remarks regarding the mass abduction of 46 schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State. The singer had previously urged citizens to pray rather than criticize the government, sparking public outrage.

The backlash began during a viral Instagram Live session where the singer addressed the kidnappings in the Oriire Local Government Area. During the broadcast, she:Defended President Bola Tinubu and security agencies, claiming they were actively working to rescue the captives.Suggested that spiritual forces or "darkness" might be blinding security personnel from locating the hostages.Urged Nigerians to channel their energy into national prayer instead of assigning blame.

These statements were heavily criticized by Nigerians who expressed frustration over ongoing insecurity and what they perceived as an insensitive deflection of government responsibility. Critics argued that practical rescue operations are needed rather than reliance on spiritual solutions.

Following the heated debate, Alaseyori released a follow-up video to clarify her stance and offer an apology:

She clarified that her initial broadcast was largely dedicated to praying for the victims and their grieving families.

She expressed deep regret that her delivery made affected families and mothers feel their voices were unheard.

Acknowledging the public`s pain, she explicitly asked for forgiveness. "Mothers, do not be offended. I am sorry... Please forgive me," she stated.

The controversy stems from a mass kidnapping incident where armed individuals abducted dozens of pupils and staff members. The kidnappers have since killed one of the teachers, Michael Oyedokun. While security operations in the forests of Oyo State remain ongoing, the emotional toll has gripped the nation, sparking demands for swift, decisive action from the authorities.
