Northern women under the umbrella of Voices for Inclusion and Equity for Women (VIEW) have condemned the abduction of 25 schoolgirls from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga, in Danko/Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State. In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by Asmau Joda, Maryam Uwais, Mairo Mandara, Aisha Oyebode, Fatima Akilu, Kadaria Ahmed, Larai Ocheja Amusan and Ier Jonathan-Ichaver, the group described the attack as a failure of leadership and another blow to the nation’s conscience. Gunmen had stormed the school in the early hours of Monday, killing the Vice Principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, and abducting 25 students. VIEW said the incident highlights the government’s continued inability to secure schools, noting that despite past tragedies in Chibok, Dapchi and Jangebe, schools across northern Nigeria remain exposed to attacks. Fear grips Nigerians as terrorists go on rampage, target large gatherings “More than a decade after repeated mass abductions, Northern Nigeria is still one of the most dangerous places in the world for a girl seeking an education,” the group said. Many of the signatories were active members of the Bring Back Our Girls movement and have worked with communities affected by insecurity.

President Bola Tinubu says he would do everything to ensure the return of the schoolgirls abducted by bandits in Kebbi State. Tinubu gave this assurance through his Vice, Kashim Stettima on Wednesday during his visit to the state. Aare Afe Babalola, legal luminary and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, has called on the National Universities Commission to revisit its accreditation procedures and clamp down on illegal and substandard private universities across Nigeria. As reported by Vanguard on Tuesday, Babalola made the appeal while welcoming the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria Accreditation Team to ABUAD, stressing that Nigeria deserves the best in higher education and should not tolerate mediocrity. He said, ”ABUAD is a non-for profit private university where nobody has shares. Whatever extra money made is always ploughed back into the university. “As at today, the valuation of the University is put at over N300 billion. When you go round, you will see for yourself: the hospital, the farm, the industrial park, the colleges, and the serene campus. “According to the World Bank, the three objectives of a university properly so called are: quality teaching, quality research, and community service. We are proud that we have been excelling in all these three parameters.” Babalola also lamented the proliferation of illegal universities, urging regulators to take decisive action. “Previously, the NUC used to insist on prior visitation to permanent sites of proposed universities before approval. They will look at the buildings, number, and quality of teachers among other parameters before approval. There is a long list of illegal private universities in Nigeria today. “I would like the NUC to seriously consider closing such illegal universities down and arrest their owners. This country deserves the best and should therefore not tolerate substandard education.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed for second reading a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to reduce the minimum age requirement for governorship and Senate elections from 35 to 30 years. The bill, titled “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to Reduce the Age for Qualification for Membership of the Senate and Office of the Governor and for Related Matters (HB. 2235),” is sponsored by Hon. Currently, candidates for the Senate and governorship positions must be at least 35 years old, while those seeking House of Representatives seats may contest from age 25.
