The University of Ibadan (UI), the University of Lagos (UNILAG), and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) have taken the lead as Nigeria`s top three institutions in the newly released July 2026 Webometrics Ranking of World Universities.

According to the report, which evaluated 32,148 higher education institutions worldwide, the University of Ibadan retained its premium position in the country but placed 1,291st globally. UNILAG followed closely at 2nd place nationally (1,355th globally), while UNN clinched the 3rd spot (1,397th globally).

Covenant University, Ota, emerged as the highest-ranked private university, occupying the 4th national position and 1,522nd on the global stage. Landmark University (5th nationally) and the University of Ilorin (6th nationally) completed the top tier of local institutions. Despite the strong local showing, stakeholders have noted with concern that Nigeria’s premier institutions remain outside the competitive global top 1,000.

The United States continues to dominate global higher education, securing seven out of the top 10 positions. Harvard University retained its status as the world`s number one institution, followed by Stanford University.

The United Kingdom made a strong showing in the top tier, with the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge ranking third and fourth globally. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) completed the world`s top five, while the University of Toronto led Canada at 12th place globally.

Published twice a year, the Webometrics ranking evaluates global institutions based on their digital presence, research impact, accessibility of scholarly resources, and open-access excellence.
